Supporting Community Development

Being a Co-op isn’t just about providing a product or service. The ongoing success of our Co-op is not only shared with the members, but also with the communities where we live, work and play.

The Slocan Valley Co-op through its new Community Development Program, recently donated $1,500 to the Slocan Park Community Hall Society to match their fundraising event efforts to replace the community playground.

The Co-op will also assist with the delivery of construction materials by providing its forklift and labour. The Slocan Park Community Hall and existing playground sit next door to the Co-op. It is often utilized by members of the community, as well as by travelers in the area when they stop in at the store and need a nice place to rest from the road. The new playground will allow for a safe place for children to play, and for everyone to relax while taking in the beauty of the Kootenays. Everyone at the Co-op is happy to support the new project, scheduled to begin at the end of June.

The following is an excerpt from The Nelson Daily story - A Play Place for All: "Multiple slides, stepping stones and a climbing wall: the Slocan Park Community Hall Society will upgrade its current playground by installing new equipment, renew the surfacing, as well as add new perimeter fencing. When complete, the playground will provide a safe and innovative play space for children ages 2 to 12.

“We’re a small community with a big heart and are very enthusiastic about upgrading our playground for the children and families in Slocan Park and surrounding areas,” said Lorraine Podovelnikoff. “This upgraded, safe and public playground will promote physical activity and unstructured play for more children. It will encourage family members to attend this green space and socialize with friends and neighbours, thus fostering the well-being of individuals and the community.” ---

The fantastic support of the members enables their Slocan Valley Co-op to continue its purpose at helping to be a builder of the community. Thank you members!
